2022: Study in China International Students’ Scholarships from the Shanghai Government
The Shanghai Government Scholarship for international students is presently accepting applications for the academic year 2022–2023. Undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate degree programs in Shanghai are eligible for the scholarships.
The scholarship aims to draw talented and bright individuals from around the globe and to further foster international collaboration and exchanges in Shanghai’s educational system.
There are two categories in the program: A and B. While the B-type scholarship is a partial scholarship that will only pay tuition and comprehensive medical insurance, the A-type scholarship is completely financed and will cover tuition, housing, living expenses, and health insurance during the scholarship time.

Scholarship Details:
Shanghai Municipal People’s Government established “Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students” (hereinafter referred to as SGS) in 2006 with the aim of building a science and technology innovation center with global influence, fostering international cooperation and communication, and luring more outstanding prospective international students to study in Shanghai.
It was created to provide funding for exceptional potential overseas students to attend Shanghai’s higher education institutions.
Scholarship Requirements:
To be considered for the IMES, you must:
(1) Applicant must be a non-Chinese citizen in good health.
(2) Age and education background:
For undergraduate programs, applicants must hold a high school diploma or higher and be under the age of 25. For master’s programs, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and be under the age of 35. For PhD programs, applicants must hold a master’s degree or higher with academic research ability and be under the age of 40.
The applicant should hold a high school diploma and be under the age of 23. They should also have a letter of pre-admission to an undergraduate program from a Shanghai institution.
(3) Outstanding in academic performance.
(4) Language proficiency:
Generally, applicant should achieve Chinese level of HSK4 and meet the language requirements of the applied university and program.
(5) Meeting entry requirements of the applied university and program.
(6) Applicant that has received any other scholarships offered by Chinese government or organizations is not entitled to apply SGS.

Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and universities will organize activities such as ‘Experiencing China’ and ‘Studying in Shanghai’ for international students, especially SGS students, helping them further understand the society and culture in Shanghai and China.

Applicants can log onto http://apply.study.shmec.gov.cn (Study in Shanghai website), which provides information on universities, courses, application periods, and procedures.
Applicants can apply for the scholarship on the website. The application period is generally from February to April. The date and procedure of application may differ each year, please refer to the official websites of those universities.
