Hamlin was born and raised in McKees Rocks, a town in Allegheny County near Pittsburgh, and he later became a standout at Pittsburgh Central Catholic. Hamlin helped guide the Vikings to a 15-1 record, the WPIAL Class AAAA championship, and the PIAA state title during his senior year by recording 89 tackles, two interceptions, and three fumble recoveries.
