Scholarships for Graduate Study in Canada (Vanier CGS) 2023

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program (Vanier CGS) was developed with the intention of luring and keeping exceptional PhD candidates as well as establishing Canada as a leading international hub for higher education and research.

Scholarship details:

• Deadline: Before 1 Nov 2022 (annual)
• Study in: Canada
• Course starts: May/Sept 2023
• Host Institution(s): Canadian Universities with Vanier CGS allocation.
• Level/Field(s) of study: PhD programmes (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
• Field(s) of study: Health research; natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social sciences and/or humanities research.
• Number of Scholarships: Up to 166 scholarships annually
• Scholarship value/duration: $50,000 per year for three years.

A doctoral program that qualifies must have the following elements:

a substantial amount of study that results in the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, academic publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is evaluated at the institutional level as a requirement for a completion of the program.

If they feature a sizable autonomous research component, as mentioned above, clinically-oriented programs of study and joint graduate research programs with professional degrees (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD) are also suitable programs.

eligibility prerequisite:

• Nomination by only one Canadian institution that holds a Vanier CGS quota;

• Not holding a doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research program) Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;

• Intention to pursue, following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate program) studies and research at the nominating institution;

• Having completed 20 monthsor less of doctoral studies as of 1 May 2023

• Having completed 32 months or less of full-time study in their doctoral program, by 1 May 2023 if:

• Enrolled in a joint graduate research program. Applicants that fall into this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program; or

• Accessing directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s program); or

• Accessing from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.

• Having achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates should check the first class average as defined by individual institutions

• Not holding, or having held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC.

Application instructions:

• Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian Institution with a Vanier CGS quota. Students cannot apply directly to the Vanier CGS program.

• Candidates can apply in one of two ways. Either by the student informing the faculty at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program OR by institution initiating the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.

• The student must prepare the application and submit it to the nominating institution by the set internal deadline using the ResearchNet application system. Following that, the nominating institution forwards the nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat by 1 November 2022.
