Vivian Lai Biography
Actress and television personality Vivian Lai Yi-ling was born in Taiwan and now resides in Singapore.
Life and career
Born in Taiwan, Lai relocated to Singapore with her Taiwanese family while she was still a student. She joined Star Search Singapore 1999 and was the winner in the Singapore edition and the overall champion in the female participants’ category.
Lai began out as an actor, making her debut in Knotty Liaisons, and garnered positive reviews. She ultimately branched into presenting and has presented many sorts of programming ranging from culinary reviews to travelogues. In 2012, after multiple nominations, she earned her first professional award, the Best Supporting Actress award, at the Star Awards 2012 for her performance as a Chinese immigrant in Love Thy Neighbour.
At the Star Awards 2015, Lai got the All-Time Favourite Artiste after earning the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award from 2001, 2003-2004, 2007-2014 correspondingly with Jeanette Aw.
Lai is also the brand ambassador for Pokka beverages, Kirei Kirei soap, Samsung electrical equipment and Osim massage.
Husband
Vera and Ariel are Lai and Alain Ong’s kids; Lai is married to Alain Ong and the pair has two daughters together. Pokka International is led by Alain Ong, who also serves as the Deputy Group CEO of Pokka Corporation, the company for whom Lai has served as brand ambassador for a number of years beginning at around 2008. As a result, this has garnered its fair share of controversy, amid charges of conflict of interest whereby in 2012, she was paid S$1 million to continue supporting the company. In addition, this has attracted its fair share of controversy.
In September of 2018, her husband, Ong, was suspended from his duties by Pokka Corporation as a result of an internal audit. Subsequently, he accepted a new job that was given to him by Kimly, a company for which he was a non-executive director.
The next month, despite Mediacorp’s assertions that her contract would stay unaltered, Lai’s role as an ambassador was terminated, and she was no longer compensated for her work.
